Free Crochet Pattern No. 2: Fast Shawl

This pattern makes a good size shawl

Materials: Size 5mm  (UK No.6; US 8/H) Crochet Hook;  Under 300g 8 Ply (Double Knitting) Yarn
Abreviations: mm: millimeters; g: grammes (UK) grams (US); ch: chain; dc: double crochet; sp: space; cm: centimeters; in: inches
Make 4 ch and join:
(1)  3ch. 2dc. 1ch. 3dc., turn
(2)  3ch. 2dc. 1ch. in first sp.
      1dc. 1ch. in next sp.
      (2dc. 1ch, 2dc) 1ch. in next sp.
      1dc. 1ch. in next sp.
       2dc. 1ch. 1dc., turn
(3)  4ch. 2dc. in first sp.
      (1ch. 1dc.) twice, 1ch.
      2dc. 2ch. 2dc. in next sp. 1ch.
      (1dc. 1ch.) twice
      2dc. 1ch. 1dc., turn
(4)  4 ch. 2dc. in first sp. 1ch.
      (1dc. 1ch.) 3 times,
      3dc. 2ch. 3dc. in next sp. 1ch.

(7) After doing the first 3 spaces - instead of doing 2dc etc. do 3dc. 2ch. 3dc. then the 3  sp. to the 3dc. etc. centre and same down the other side.
Continue in this manner until each quarter has 43 spaces.  The shawl should then be big enough, or if preferred crochet more or fewer rounds until required size is reached.  73.5 cm (29 inches) seems to be a very satisfactory size (measured down centre and before adding fringe).
Making The Fringe:
Always have an uneven total of spaces for making the fringe - using alternate spaces for the fringe hangings.
Cut a 56cm (22in) strand of yarn for half the number of spaces at the finish of the shawl (including the space in the centre of the 3dc, 2ch, 3dc pattern as well as the space at each end of shawl).  i.e. If you finished with 43 spaces in each quarter you will require 89 strands of yarn.
Method
Insert crochet hook into first space;  Fold strand of yarn in half and put centre loop onto crochet hook; draw hook & yarn back through the space and then put the double strand of yarn round hook and pull it rght through the loop on the hook until it hangs down in two strands as a fringe.  Ensure the fringe is firm but do not pull too tight.  Continue in this manner until all 89 pieces of yarn are hanging below the shawl each with a two strand fringe.
For the first fringe piece at the begining of the shawl take the double strand of yarn together with the FIRST strand of the second fringe piece and knot them together. (Note that the last fringe piece knotted at the end of the shawl will also have a double strand).  For each subsequent fringe piece take the SECOND strand of the fringe piece and the FIRST strand of the next fringe piece and knot them together.  Continue working in this manner throughout until there are four knots down each strand leaving a length of yarn 6cm (2.5in) to hang in a fringe after the final knot.  Trim the fringe evenly. Refer to the shawl on the table in the photo to view the fringe pattern.
