It's lovely knitting baby clothes and there always seems to be a steady demand for hand-knitteds despite the ever-growing supply of manufactured clothing.

Making little jackets is quick and easy.  You don't have to stick to the predictable pinks and blues these days.  Why not try knitting one in Dad's favourite football colours?  Be as progressive as you can and you'll find yourself a popular market product. 


 
It's still always worth knitting up a good stock of the old-fashioned styles and pastel shades though - they are still a popular choice!

Knitting Tip No. 1 Neat Edges

It's easy to make a nice neat edge to your work - just work the first row after cast on by knitting into the back of each stitch.

It is very suitable for pullovers and cardigans.  Beanies and other hats vary according to the pattern.  Some may be better just done with an ordinary rib that will stretch naturally, while for others it makes a nice neat border to knit the first row through the back of the stitch before the rib - for example it is generally fine for beanies that have a turn-up because the folded edge naturally stretches sufficiently.

It may not be so good for items that need to have an opening that should widen a bit more such as gloves that need the cuffs to expand easily while the glove is pulled onto the hand.  The rib at the tops of socks also needs to have sufficient elasticity.

These days baby beanies have many different shapes.

While experimenting with different colours, fibres and shapes is fun remember that babies have delicate skin so handspun, as well as other coarse fibres, is not usually suitable.  Generally speaking, Baby wool is best for babies!

Baby Booties

Baby booties are fun to make.  They are quick and easy!  There are many beautiful patterns and they are popular gifts. 

Take a few pairs to show the owner or manager of a Florist shop and if you've presented them in an appealing display you may easily make a sale with a possibility of supplying them on a regular basis. I have sold quite a lot that way and so far I have never had a rejection.

Remember to approach the shop Manager at a suitable time.  Don't get in the way of customers!


Try asking florists if they'd like you to supply them!  When flowers are ordered for the birth of a baby, florists quite enjoy popping in a cute pair of booties as a little gift.

Scarves are quite quick to knit in garter stitch on large needles.

Keep an eye on current fashions.    Scarves can be any width and length.  They can be practical or frivolous, heavy or light.

Encourage friends and acquaintances to wear your scarves - a free gift to a teenager can be the beginning of a sensational new fashion! 

Be bold!  Be outrageous - or be subtle!  Put your product out there in the public arena and look for innovative ways of doing it.

Friends of the parents-to-be and prospective grans are in abundance! 

The hats are made by knitting two identical squares.  The hat shape can be left in the popular modern square style or gathered at the top (as in the photos below).

If you want to sell your knitting choose quick and easy things to make.

Remember that clothing is a big seller - just check out the large number of clothing stores at any shopping centre!

Fashion accessories are popular. Try making:  hats, gloves, socks, scarves, shawls, bags, belts, slippers and even knitted jewellery!

You've got to price it right!   It's a fine line between being paid for your valuable time and being realistic.  If there's the same product nearby for half the price guess which one will sell!

If you want to be paid properly for your time then your product needs to be unique in some way.  Stamp your individuality on each item that you make.
