NB: There is no turn up with this pattern but if you require one then rib 4 inches (10 cm) instead of 2 inches (5 cm) and remember to sew the rib on outside of hat when joining sides for turn up.
Materials:
1 pair UK Size 4 Needles (6mm) US Size 10
Use same needles throughout
Approximately 30 grammes (US 30 grams) of Double Knitting Wool (8 Ply)
Abbreviations: k: knit; rep: repeat; p: purl; sts: stitches, in: inches; cm: centimetres; st.st.: stocking stitch; tog: together; m: make; sl: slip; psso: pass slip stitch over; p/u: pick up; tbl: through back of loop
Terms: stocking stitch: 1st row knit, 2nd row purl; p/u & k1 tbl: pick up and knit through the back of the loop the horizontal thread between the stitch just knitted and the next stitch
Cast on 80 sts
1st Row (optional): knit through the back of the loop of each stitch
Work 7 Rows (or 2 in, 5 cm) in k1, p1 Rib
Next Row: k1, p/u & k1 tbl, p1, k1, p/u & k1 tbl, p1 continue in k1, p1 rib until last 4 sts, k1, p/u & k1 tbl, p1, k1, p/u & k1 tbl, p1 (84 sts)
Begin Pattern:
Row 1: k
Row 2: *k2, p4*, rep from * to * until end
Row 3: k
Row 4: p3, *k2, p4*, rep from * to * until last 3 sts, k2, p1
These 4 rows form the pattern. Continue in this manner until work measures approx. 6 in (15 cm);

Working in st.st.:
Row 1: k2 tog, k2 tog, k4, k2 tog, *k6, k2tog*, rep from * to * until last 10 sts, k2 tog, k2 tog, k4, k2 tog (70 sts rem)
Row 2: p
Row 3: (k5, k2tog), rep to end (60 sts rem)
Row4: p
Row 5: (k4, k2 tog), rep to end (50 sts rem)
Row 6: p
Row 7: (k3, k2 tog), rep. to end (40 sts rem)
Row 8: p
Row 9: (k2, k2 tog), rep to end (30 sts rem)
Row 10: p
Row 11: (k1, k2 tog), rep to end (20 sts rem)
Row 12: p
Leaving a long tail for sew up, cut wool and thread tail through rem 20 sts. Pull up tight and turn Inside out. Secure by stitching but don't cut the thread. Using rem tail sew sides tog neatly and fasten off. Turn Right Side out
