Two Colour Beanie: Free Pattern No. 5



Size: Average

NB: There is no turn up with this pattern but if you require one then rib 4 inches (10 cm) instead of 2 inches (5 cm) and remember to sew the rib on outside of hat when joining sides for turn up.

Materials:
1 pair UK Size 4 Needles (6mm) US Size 10
Use same needles throughout
Approximately 30 grammes (US 30 grams) of Double Knitting Yarn (8 Ply) Lilac with a small amount of White or colours of your choice

Abbreviations:
k: Knit; p: Purl; sl: slip; st.st.: Stocking Stitch; in: inches; cm: centimetres; tog: together; rep: repeat; st.:stitch; sts.: stitches; rem: remaining; p/u: pick up; tbl: through the back of the loop

Terms:
Stocking Stitch: 1st row knit, 2nd row purl; sl 1: slip the next stitch onto the right needle without knitting it; p/up & k1: tbl: pick up horizontal thread between stitch just knitted and next stitch & knit it through the back of the loop;

Using lilac: Cast on 80 sts
1st Row (optional): Knit into the back of each stitch
Work 7 Rows (or 2 in, 5 cm) in K1, P1 Rib
Next Row: *k1, p1* repeat to last 2 sts, k1, p/u & k1 tbl, p1 (81 sts)

Begin Pattern:
Row 1: Using white: *sl 1 purlwise, k2*, rep from * to * until end
Row 2: Using white :  k
Row 3: Using lilac: *k2, sl 1 purlwise,*, rep from * to * until end
Row 4: Using lilac: k
These last four rows form the two-colour pattern.

Repeat the last four two-colour pattern rows until work measures 6 in (15 cm) ending with Row 3:
Next Row: Using lilac: k until last 2 sts, k2tog (80 sts rem)


Shape Top
Using lilac and working in st.st.:
Row 1: k2 tog. k5, k2 tog, *k6, k2tog*, rep from * to * until end (70 sts rem)
Row 2: p
Row 3: (k5, k2tog),  rep to end (60 sts rem)
Row 4: p
Row 5: (k4, k2 tog), rep to end (50 sts rem)
Row 6: p
Row 7: (k3, k2 tog), rep. to end (40 sts rem)
Row 8: p
Row 9: (k2, k2 tog), rep to end (30 sts rem)
Row 10: p
Row 11: (k1, ktog), rep to end (20 sts rem)
Row 12: p
Leaving a long tail for sew up, cut wool and thread tail through rem 20 sts. Pull up tight and turn Inside out.  Secure by stitching but don't cut the thread.  Using rem tail sew sides tog neatly and fasten off. Turn Right Side out.
