Fancy Beanie: Free Pattern No.1




Size: Average

NB: There is no turn up with this pattern but if you require one then rib 4 inches (10 cm) instead of 2 inches (5 cm) and remember to sew the rib on outside of hat when joining sides for turn up.

Materials:
1 pair UK Size 4 Needles (6mm) US Size 10
Use same needles throughout
Approximately 30 grammes (US 30 grams) of Double Knitting Wool (8 Ply)

Abreviations:
k: knit; p: purl; st.st.: Stocking Stitch; m: make; in: inches; mm:millimetres; cm: centimetres; tog: together; rep: repeat; sts: stiches; rem: remaining; tbl: through back of loop; p/u: pick up

Terms:
through back of loop: knit the sitch taking the needle through the back of the loop; p/u & k1 tbl: pick up horizontal thread between stitch just knitted and next stitch & knit it through the back of the loop; stocking stitch: 1st row knit, 2nd row purl;
Cast on 80 sts
1st Row (optional): knit through the back of the loop of each stitch
Work 7 Rows (or 2 in, 5 cm) in k1, p1 Rib
Next Row: k1, p/u 1, p1, p/u & k tbl, *k1, p1*, rep from * to * until last 2 sts, k1, p/u 1, p1 (83sts)

Begin Pattern:
Row 1: *p1, k1tbl, p1, k2*, rep from * to * until last 3 sts, p1, k1tbl, p1
Row 2: k1, p1tbl, k1, *p2, k1, p1tbl, k1* rep from * to *  until end
Row 3: *p1, k1tbl, p1, k1, m1, k1*, rep from * to * until last 3 sts, p1, k1tbl, p1
Row 4:  k1, p1tbl, k1, *p3, k1, p1tbl, k1* rep from * to * until end
Row 5:*p1, k1tbl, p1, k3, pass 3rd st on right-hand needle over first 2 sts* rep from * to * until last 3 sts, p1, k1tbl, p1
These 5 rows form the 1st pattern
The last 4 Rows (2 to 5) form the continuing pattern thus:-
From here-on rep from Row 2

Continue in pattern in this manner (repeating rows 2 to 5) until work measures approx. 6 in (15 cm) ending with row 5

Shape Top
Working in st.st:
Row 1: k2 tog (3 times), k3, K2tog, *k6, k2 tog*, rep from * to * until  end (70 sts rem)
Row 2: p
Row 3: (k5, k2tog),  rep to end (60 sts rem)
Row 4: p
Row 5: (k4, k2 tog), rep to end (50 sts rem)
Row 6: p
Row 7: (k3, k2 tog), rep. to end (40 sts rem)
Row 8: p
Row 9: (k2, k2 tog), rep to end (30 sts rem)
Row 10: p
Row 11: (k1, k2 tog), rep to end (20 sts rem)
Row 12: p

Leaving a long tail for sew up, cut wool and thread tail through rem 20 sts. Pull up tight and turn Inside out.  Secure by stitching but don't cut the thread.  Using rem tail sew sides tog neatly and fasten off. Turn Right Side out.
